Working towards a climate neutral ECHA

ECHA is committed to improving the environment we live in, through both its work under EU chemicals legislation and as an organisation.

To do this, ECHA set up an environmental management system which has been in place since 2015. This, supported by the Agency’s environmental policy ensures that ECHA’s environmental objectives are taken into account in all its daily activities. The environmental management system is an important part of the Agency’s Integrated Management System.

With the environmental management system, ECHA aims to increase the sustainability of its operations and minimise the negative impact its activities have on the environment. This is done by carefully using natural resources and making environmentally conscious choices when selecting products and services from external vendors.

In the long-term, ECHA's environmental actions are guided by the Executive Director's pledge in 2020 to our Management Board to become carbon-neutral by 2030.

ECHA's environmental management system is regularly monitored and is certified according to the ISO 14001:2015 standard (since 2016). The Agency is also proud to be registered under the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).

This certification strengthens ECHA’s environmental performance and helps to raise awareness among stakeholders. For more information, read ECHA's environmental statement.
